This illustration was done for the Frazier Historical Arms Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The original scratchboard rendering is 18-inches tall and was reproduced approximately 6-feet tall on glass panels inside the museum. This piece is one of nine illustrations that depict the advancement of the gun in Colonial America (1600 - 1850).
The gambler of 1850's American often concealed weapons on various parts of his body; furthermore, he adorned himself with large amounts of jewelry. If the gambler lost all his cash, he could use the jewelry to make a wager.
