Got a call from Susan McClellan, the art director for Chapters Publishing. I had already done a project for them, a book about onions with recipes and information about types of onions and their characteristics. This book worked well for them and they wanted another similar book about garlic, titled "Garlic, Garlic, Garlic." They needed a cover and interior spot drawings. I will only show how the cover was done for this project, but will give examples of the spots in "finished 1" and "finished 2." The design on the new cover for "Garlic, Garlic, Garlic" will be the same as the first book (i.e., size, proportions and layout).
They sent me part of the text from the garlic book and what reference they had, which wasn't much. After talking on the phone, we agreed on some general points, maybe a farm scene, a garlic rope, good lighting and just anything that says garlic. Since we were still just trying to come up with an idea, we agreed that I would do some quick thumbnail layouts of ideas that may work. These thumbnails would be doodles, only drawn good enough to get the idea across.
Follow the steps to see how this project was done.
