Spanish Soldier with matchlock gun

This is one of nine illustrations that I did for an historical arms museum [See all nine finished illustrations]. The illustratrations will be printed lifesize on glass and used as signage inside the museum [See the signage]. My job was to illustrate full-length figures of soldiers dressed in the appropriate clothing and holding the correct weapon for the time period being depicted. Each illustration will be screen-printed life size on glass, so the illustrations must be carefully rendered.

These illustrations are being used by a museum, so it is understandable that the most critical factor is to get the drawings historically accurate—the curator at the museum checked the progress of the illustrations, making sure that all clothing and arms were correct.

Follow the steps to see how the Spanish Soldier illustration on the left was executed.
